Wanting to write a movie review again, attempt no. 1

Working from home made me feel a bit disoriented because I never really ‘call it a day’ and go home as an achievement of getting work of the day done, I just go to sleep, take a shower and start again. Home is work, and I don’t have the ability to mentally manage my time — yet. I started feeling numb and dull until a few days ago I read a newsletter written by a group of friends who talked about their lives from family affairs to learning to cook in a kost without a kitchen sink. It made me want to ‘have a life’, so I reconnect with my friends, start making time to go to the kitchen and help my mom again, start reading with some music on, and start to watch movies again. Last night I watched The Half of It. A coming of age movie about romance with a fresh premise: A lesbian smart ass helps a jock to write a love letter for their crush. The movie takes place in a Netflix universe where high school kids talk about repressed british literature, philosophy, and the psychology behind painting strokes, but I like the ‘talking about god and music in a pool’ scene.

This scene!

It was a fresh breeze of a slightly deep, stupidly messy, pretty entertaining movie with an okay ending.

I personally like the part when they exchange stimulating conversations through letters and chats, and the mural idea is so sweet I almost hate it. The friendship between the lesbian smartass and the stereotypical jock is also enjoyable, although it’s painful to see whenever the guy is with the dream girl, they have nothing in common, the guy is sweet but clueless and they don’t talk about anything! Nightmare.

See what I mean?

Overall it’s a nice story about friendship, a slighty cliché one about love, but it’s delightful to see a beautiful, smart, emotionally complex, almost too good to be true character like the girl they both fall in love with.

7.5/10 from me, a nice feel good movie when you start to feel numb and in need to feel something.
